Pillowcase Dress Tutorial

TUTORIAL NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IN MY ETSY SHOP
When I first wanted to make a pillowcase dress I started looking all over the internet for tutorials. Some were good, a few were "eh", but I never really found one that provided me with instructions for a FINISHED garment (ie. no annoying raw edges) that had a professional look. Since then, I have made close to 150 dresses and learned a thing or two about the construction, which honestly, is so easy and straightforward. I am doing things quite a bit differently than when I started; I've simplified and streamlined! I LOVE these dresses; they're simple, don't require a "pattern", just some simple instructions, and take under 1 yd. of fabric to make- depending on the size. Of course, if you're looking to just buy a dress instead of making one, just stop by the SHOP.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I love how you have the coordinating fabric at the bottom.

Awesome! I'm excited to make one! I linke to this at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com

I love your fabrics! This is almost exactly how I make my dresses too. I love making them for gifts! The french seams are so easy and I use them on EVERY garment I make, even bloomers. I discovered how easy they were when I purchased a very antique dress in poor condition but the seams were perfect! I think these will be dresses that will stick around for a long time. Great tutorial!

thank.. you are right about the tutorials. all i wanted was one that would give measurements for regular fabric ( not a pillowcase)

Thanks for this tutorial. The dress is gorgeous and the tutorial is so detailed and has great pictures. Thankyou...

Great upcycling idea, and the result is so darn pretty!

I just made this dress and love it...blogged about it at www.coraannedesigns.blogspot.com
Thanks!

adorable!

one suggestion: use elastic all the way through the neckline (a completely attached circle) and sew the ends of the ribbons into the openings at the neckline - this way if the ribbons come undone, the dress doesn't fall down AND you can just slip the dress over the head instead of trying to tie bows on a fidgety toddler.

thanks, you made it so much easier!upromm

Thank you so much! I've been wanting to attempt to make a pillowcase dress for my daughter, and you're instructions are perfect! At first I was only finding instructions for making a dress out of an actual pillowcase and I was getting so discouraged, because I found the cutest fabric that I wanted to use. I'm going to try it this weekend and I'm super excited!

Megan said...

I'm not sure why, but it won't let me open the tutorial, and I really want to see it! Can you please help me?

ANKsmommy said...

I tried to open the pillowcase dress tutorial as well but for whatever reason it wouldn't open. I would really love to see your instructions!!!

Julie said...

Your tutorial was the best. I used it once and went tonight to use it again and can't open it. You will have to figure out what is going on with the link because that was the best tutorial out there. I hadn't done french seams before and your tut made it so easy.
